Q: What is so special about a CafeScribe digital textbook?

A: CafeScribe provides tools to use digital textbooks in ways that you have never been able to before. You can easily search an entire text for specific information in a matter of seconds; you can take notes directly in the text, bookmark important areas, and highlight information for easy recall and review when preparing for exams or writing papers.

Q: Can I share my notes?

A: In most cases you are able to share your note with those people that have the same CafeScribe title as you and are within the same institution setting as you. By default, your notes are private. In some cases, you can make them public with CafeScribe's Community Note feature..

Q: Can I test CafeScribe before purchasing a digital textbook?

A: Yes. In most cases CafeScribe offers a three day “Try Now, Buy Later” free trial (dependent on if the publisher allows it). Try for three days, and buy the textbook later if you like the digital textbook learning experience.

Q: Will I need to sign up to Try Now, Buy Later?

A: Yes. You will need to create a CafeScribe Reader account to try CafeScribe. Just go to https://reader.cafescribe.com

Q: Will I need to give a credit card number to Try Now, Buy Later?

A: No. You do not need to provide your credit card number to try CafeScribe.

Q: What happens if I purchase the digital textbook after I try it?

A: All your Try Now, Buy Later notes, highlights, and bookmarks are available to you only when you decide to buy the textbook.

A: No. All your Try Now, Buy Later notes, highlights, and bookmarks are available to you when you decide to buy the textbook.

Q: Can I try the CafeScribe digital textbook on multiple devices?

A: Your trial book is available for three days and can be accessed on multiple devices (though not simultaneously) using our online CafeScribe Reader. Once you buy the digital textbook, you can access the material at any time on any device with an internet connection and an Adobe® Flash® Player enabled browser, one at a time. You can also download your digital textbook on up to three computers for most titles.

Q: What happens if I decide not to buy the CafeScribe digital textbook?

A: You will not be able to access the book or your notes, highlights, or Snap Summary after the trial period has ended. The textbook displays grayed-out on your bookshelf.

Q: Can I print or copy and paste in a trial digital textbook?

A: No. Print and copy/paste are not available in the trial version.

Q: Can I copy and paste digital textbook content to other programs from a purchased textbook?

A: Yes. However, publishers limit the amount of content you can export. The average limit is 30% of the book. You can always see how much is remaining by clicking on "Book Info" beside the title on your bookshelf.

Q: Can I highlight and take notes in the digital textbook?

A: Yes. Use the highlighting tool to highlight content. You can also take notes and attach your notes to specific highlighted content, or you can take general page notes.

Q: What is the Snap Summary feature?

A: The Snap Summary feature allows you to view all of your highlights and notes together in one convenient place, allowing you to create customized study guides by using the filters.

Q: Does the CafeScribe Reader have a text-to-speech feature?

A: The CafeScribe Reader does offer a text-to-speech feature which allows you to listen to your textbook through your computer.

Q: How do I use text to speech?

A: To use the text-to-speech feature, be sure that you are using the online CafeScribe Reader and click on the ‘Start Speaking Text’ button in the lower toolbar. You can also select specific text to be read.

Q: Can I read my digital textbook offline?

A: The CafeScribe Reader is meant to be an online reader, but you have the option to download your books onto your computer for offline reading. Offline is not available with CafeScribe Mobile. To read offline, follow these steps:

  1. Access the online CafeScribe Reader: https://reader.cafescribe.com
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Find your name in the upper right-hand corner where it shows you are logged in.
  4. Click the down arrow next to your name.
  5. Select “Download Offline”.
  6. Follow the instructions from there.

Important: Your downloaded books need to be renewed every ten days. Every time you access CafeScribe Offline while you are connected to the internet, your downloaded textbooks automatically renew after syncing your bookshelf.
