My network uses a proxy server. How do I configure MyScribe to access the server?

Background

Corporations sometimes use proxy servers as a way to monitor and control the web traffic generated by their employees. When your company is running a proxy server it means your computer has to request web pages via a special internal website rather than contacting outside websites directly.

Unfortunately, there is no standard website address where all companies locate their proxy servers. There are some technologies to help products like MyScribe discover the proxy settings on its own, but we've found they don't work very reliably.

How do I know MyScribe cannot connect to the server?

If you are seeing the message "Cannot connect to server" when you are trying to sign-in with MyScribe it means:

  1. You are trying to sign-in for the first time and you are not connected to the Internet
  2. You are connected to the Internet, but the MyScribe server is not responding
  3. You are connected to the Internet, but the messages from MyScribe cannot reach the MyScribe server directly because they must first go through your organization's proxy server.

What to do?

If you are having problems connecting to the server and you're confident that you are connected to the Internet try this:

  1. Open MyScribe and go to the Edit > Preferences menu option
  2. Click on the 'Network' tab
  3. Try selecting the option 'Detect proxy automatically' and select 'Ok'.
  4. Try again to sign-in (you may need to restart MyScribe)

Still no luck? You'll need to figure out the proxy address that your particular organization. A few different ways:

  • Contact your IT help desk and ask them to tell you the proxy server settings
  • Open Internet Explorer and go to the Tools > Options menu option. Under the 'Connections' tab, click on the 'LAN Settings'. The Local Area Network settings dialog may contain the proxy server address you need to use. Please include the 'http://' prefix when entering the proxy server address in MyScribe.

To date we've been able to get MyScribe to work in every networking environment we've encountered so give your IT Help Desk a call for the information and let us know if you still have problems getting things working.
