Q. What is an eBook?
An eBook is a print book that has been converted to an electronic format and made available for reading on your computer.
Q. What is the difference between an eBook and a CaféScribe Digital TextBook?
The CaféScribe digital textbook is an eBook with multiple features, supporting multiple functionality that other eBooks do not have. For example, annotating and note sharing are two of the features found in CaféScribe digital textbooks but are not part of other eBooks.

Q. What is CaféScribe?
CaféScribe is an e-book marketplace and social networking site that facilitates learning and promotes academic performance by allowing students to form virtual study groups, share notes and insights, as well as navigate content in easy, new and useful ways.
Q. What am I purchasing when I buy a CaféScribe Digital TextBook?
CaféScribe's book license grants you a lifetime non-transferable license for that edition of the book that can be accessed on up to three different computers.
Q. How can I purchase a CaféScribe digital textbook?
Online from the CaféScribe web site
  1. Go to www.cafescribe.com; create and log into your CafeScribe account. If this is your first time visiting CafeScribe, you can create an account by clicking on "Join" on the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  2. Click on the Digital Textbook Store tab.
  3. Search by title, author's last name or publisher using the Search digital textbooks text box.
  4. Select a book
  5. Click the Add to Cart button and follow the checkout prompts

  7. Click the 'Try now, Buy later' button to receive access to the digital book for a 7-day trial period. Next, you will need to download MyScribe to your computer. Once you download and login to MyScribe, you will receive access to your digital book and your 7-day trial period begins.


Online from your college bookstore's web site
Your college bookstore may provide a link to the CaféScribe online bookstore. You may have to look for a link on your school's site that says eBooks, or 'Digital Books' in order to gain access to the CafeScribe online bookstore. Once you have clicked through to the CafeScribe online bookstore, please follow the directions found above to place your order or to gain access to a 7-day trial version of the digital book you are interested in purchasing.

In-person from your college bookstore

If your campus bookstore is a Follett store or one of its partner bookstores, you will see a shelf tag where the new and used print textbooks are stacked offering the option of purchasing the digital textbook from CaféScribe. To buy the digital textbook, simply take the card to the cash register. The cashier will give you the activation code and the link to the website where you will need to go to download the MyScribe reader and your digital book. It is extremely important to keep your receipt as it has the activation code needed to download your digital book.



To activate your book, visit www.cafescribe.com/prepaid.php:

  1. Type the activation code found on the receipt the cashier gave you
  2. Create a user account for CafeScribe
  3. Select the Terms and Conditions check box
  4. Click Send Registration
  5. You will need to also download MyScribe before you can download and access your digital book
Q. What if I lose my activation code?
If you lose your receipt, please contact your store manager to retrieve the PIN from the eFollett system and reprint the receipt. (The reprinted receipt will not show the PIN. It must be retrieved separately.)
Q. Can I sell my digital textbook to another student when I am done using it?
No. CaféScribe does not allow you to resell to another student or individual.
Q. Can I buy a CaféScribe digital textbook at my bookstore?

Q. When will more textbook titles be available to download?

Q. How do I read my Digital Textbook?
Download and install your free copy of MyScribe software for Windows or Mac.
Q. What mobile device options are available?
Use the MyScribe Portable (Windows only) on your USB flash drive. You must have Internet access from the computer where you are using MyScribe Portable.
Q. Can I read my Digital Textbook on the Amazon Kindle™?
Proprietary eBook readers like the Amazon Kindle™ work only with formatted trade books (not textbooks). The result is CaféScribe eBooks cannot be read on eBook readers like the Amazon Kindle™.
Q. Can I read it on a smart phone?
At this point, CaféScribe does not support the ability to read Digital Textbooks on an iPhone™ or Blackberry™.


MyScribe

Q. What is MyScribe?
MyScribe is the proprietary CaféScribe Digital Textbook reader software that can run on both Windows and Mac OSX. MyScribe can be downloaded to your local computer and used to read your CaféScribe digital textbook online and offline.

Q. What user name and password do I use after I install and run MyScribe the first time?
Unless your university has issued you a special username and password, you will use the email address and password you used to create your CaféScribe account.
Q. I could not install MyScribe. What should I do next?
The installer must connect to our server to download a valid software license.

If you are connected to the Internet, but get an error message, it means your MyScribe program cannot reach the MyScribe server directly because of your organization's proxy server or you may be running a software firewall. Try connecting from a network that does not use a proxy server. Most home networks do not use proxy servers.

Q. I keep getting an error message when I try to sign in. What is happening?
You are allowed to use your Digital Textbook on three computers. You will get an error message if you try to install it on more than three. If you need to deactivate MyScribe on a computer, please contact our .
Q. Can I copy and paste Digital TextBook content to other programs?
Yes; however, publishers reserve the right to restrict the amount of content you can export. In general, the limit is 30% of an entire book's content. We enforce the limit by counting the number of characters that you include in each copy operation.
Q. Can I print my Digital TextBook?
Yes, you can print a portion of your digital textbook. In most cases, MyScribe will allow you to print up to 30% of a book's content.
Q. What is digital rights management and why is it necessary?
CaféScribe licenses content from textbook publishers and authors. Our licensing agreement includes restrictions that we are required to enforce. This access control is called Digital Rights Management, or DRM. That is why copying, pasting and printing is limited. We believe that as eBooks become a more familiar medium, digital rights will become less restrictive.


Taking Notes and Making Highlights

Q. Can I highlight the digital textbook and my notes?
Yes! Use the highlighting tool to label notes and highlight content the way you would with a print book. We have provided a few of the more popular highlighting colors, but you can create as many colors as you wish.
Q. What happens to my notes when I upgrade to the most recent version of MyScribe?
Upgrading your version of MyScribe will not affect your highlights and notes and will be accessible in the upgraded version of MyScribe.
Q. What is the AutoSummary feature?
Click the AutoSummary button to view all the notes that you have taken throughout the book. If you like, you can print these notes and use them for reference. Click Note Taking to return to the normal reading view. See MyScribe Help for more information on using Notes and AutoSummary features.
Q. Can I share my notes?
Yes. By default, your notes are shared. You can designate them as public or private. Once you share notes, friends can visit your profile on CafeScribe.com and subscribe to any notes that you have taken
Q. How can I subscribe to notes?
With CaféScribe and the MyScribe Reader you can connect to classmates or other readers of the digital textbook and share notes. With a few simple steps you can share notes or subscribe to a friend's notes.

  3. You will see others that are sharing notes on that book
  4. Click on the note or user you would like to subscribe to
  5. Click "Subscribe to Notes"
Q. Can I save my CaféScribe Digital Textbook to a USB?
Yes. We allow you to run the entire application from a USB device. This is called MyScribe Portable.

Q. Why try a CafeScribe Digital Textbook?
Taking advantage of the "Try Now, Buy Later" option allows you to experience all of the great features and benefits of a CaféScribe Digital Textbook for free, before you decide to purchase the material.
Q. What is so special about a CafeScribe Digital Textbook?
After you download the free MyScribe reader, you will have access to a whole host of interactive features allowing you to interact with your class material in a way that you have never before been able to do so. You can easily search an entire text for specific information in a matter of seconds; you can take notes directly in the text, bookmark important areas, and highlight information that makes it easy for you to recall and review when preparing for tests and exams. Additionally you can interact with other students and your professors within the CafeScribe environment when you purchase and download a CafeScribe Digital Textbook.
Q. How long can I try a CafeScribe Digital Textbook before I decide whether to buy it?
Most eTextBooks can be sampled for one week or seven (7) days.
Q. What happens if I purchase the eTextBook after I try it?
If you decide to purchase the book, any notes that you have made, any passages that have been highlighted, and all of the areas you have bookmarked will be carried over to the purchased book. In addition, you will receive an expanded set of rights that may allow you to print and copy/paste depending on what the publisher has configured.
Q. Will my notes disappear from the eTextBook once I buy it?
No, all notes, highlights and bookmarks remain intact.
Q. Can I try the CafeScribe Digital Textbook on multiple computers?
Your trial book will be available for one week on up to three (3) computers. Once you purchase the book, you will be able to access the material any time on up to three (3) computers.
Q. What happens if I decide not to buy the CafeScribe Digital Textbook?
If you decide not to purchase the Digital Textbook, you will not able to access the content once the trial period is over without purchasing the book.
Q. Can I print or copy and paste in a trial eTextBook?
Most trial books will have strict limits on printing and copy and pasting. The limitations may vary from eBook-to-eBook based on the limitations set by the publisher of the book.


Refund Policy

Q. What is CaféScribe's refund policy?
Digital textbooks purchased from CaféScribe.com may be returned for refund within 14 days of the date of purchase. CaféScribe digital textbooks purchased at the campus bookstore must be refunded at the bookstore where the purchase was made.
Q. What happens after I refund the digital textbook?
The purchase price will be refunded to you and the digital textbook will be deactivated. You will no longer have access to the digital textbook or to any of the notes you made when you owned it.
Q. Where can I get a refund for my digital textbook?
If you purchased your digital textbook online, you may obtain a refund by following the instructions on our Refunds FAQ. If you purchased your digital textbook at the bookstore, you will need to visit the bookstore to complete the refund transaction.
Q. I bought my book in the bookstore, can I get my refund online?
No. If you purchased your book in the bookstore, you will need to take your receipt back to that store so they can process the refund.


Using Text-to-Speech

Q. How do I use text to speech?
MyScribe offers you text to speech using a free built-in voice.
  1. Open the book you wish to read.
  2. On the Menu bar, click Enable Speech, or press the F2 key to start reading.
Microsoft Sam is the default Windows voice. Alex is the Mac OS X default voice.
Q. How do I setup an alternative voice?
Third-party text to speech voices are available. CaféScribe does not endorse or warranty any third-party voices. Downloading and testing trial versions is recommended before purchasing any third-party voices.

Q. How do I install third-party voices?
Windows:
  1. On the Start menu, click Control Panel
  2. Select Speech
  3. Select the voice in the Voice Selection box
  4. Adjust the Voice Speed slider to a comfortable speed
  5. Click OK
Mac:
  1. Click System Preferences from the Apple menu
  2. Select Speech
  3. Click Text to Speech
  4. Select the voice in the Default Voice box
  5. Select the speed in the Rate box
